"Fernweh" - (NOUN)

Farsickness, An ache and longing for far off places, a craving for travel. A yearning to explore off the beaten path, into the unknown.

Rugged, handcrafted goods and accessories, inspired by a passion for adventure.

Designed and made in our Aberdeen studio.

Quality, purpose driven goods for the modern day explorer.

Fernweh is inspired by my own passion for adventure and exploring off the beaten path, particularly the Scottish landscape and the palette of the Cairngorms. I use this inspiration to create high quality, handmade products that bring a little bit of adventure into everyday life.

It started with a chalk bag...

.

In 2014 I was lost. Not on a mountain plateau somewhere in the Highlands but in life. I had graduated with a degree in  Fashion Design from Grays School of Art the previous summer and I had no direction and no plan of what I wanted to do.

Despite this uncertainty, I had fallen in love in a new hobby, rock climbing. Several times a week I scampered up and down routes at my local climbing gym and out at local crags but missed creating.

I decided to make my own chalk bag made from waxed canvas, not a fan of the mass produced polyester designs that were available. I posted a photo online & got great feedback and had several messages asking for one so I set up a little online store and Fernweh was born!

From this, Fernweh was conceived from an urge to create high quality, artisan products for the adventurers and explorers in our midst. I make bags, knitted hats and accessories of all kinds, inspired by my passion for the outdoors, functional high quality design and sustainability.

I take my inspiration from the world around us, particularly the beautiful scenery we have here in Scotland. We are lucky to have the Cairngorms and Highlands right on our doorstep and the Scottish wilderness is a vial of creativity and inspiration.

I hope that my products inspire my customers to head out and explore the great outdoors.

We all have a responsibility to look after this fantastic land, and with Fernweh I try our best to be as conscious and ethical as possible in our collections and I believe that the best way to do this is to create products that are made to last.

I feel that sustainability through longevity, using traditional, quality fabrics and trying our hardest to create as minimal wastage as possible, not only create a much more ethical product, but create pieces that last, that will become cherished, timeless pieces in our customer's lives.

Every single Fernweh piece is handcrafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, by me in my studio in Aberdeen.
